Nexus overview ↗Nexus Recorder

Record a test case as you click through your app.

Nexus Recorder is a browser extension for Chrome and Edge. Start it from Nexus, work through your app, take screenshots, and check the recorded steps before you create the test case.

Install Nexus Recorder →

01 / What it does

Walk through your app once. Get a test case.

Nexus Recorder is a browser extension for Chrome and Edge. Start it from the New test case form in Nexus, click through the application you are testing, and each click, entry, selection and page change becomes a readable step. Take screenshots as you go. When you stop, the steps and screenshots come back to Nexus for you to check before you create the test case.

Readable steps, not code

Steps are written the way a tester would write them: Click “Sign in” button, Enter text in “Email”, Select “New Zealand” in “Country”, Go back to /checkout. Edit, reorder or delete them while you record.

Screenshots in the right step

Capture the whole screen or drag a box around the part that matters. Each screenshot is attached to the test case and shown inside the step it belongs to.

You stay in charge

Nothing is saved to Jira until you press Create in Nexus. Add expected results, fill in any required fields and remove anything you don’t want first.

Included in Basic and Pro

Recording is part of manual test authoring, so it comes with both Nexus editions. It doesn’t use AI.

02 / Install

Add Nexus Recorder to your browser.

Each tester installs the extension once in Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Firefox and Safari aren’t supported yet.

From the Chrome Web Store

The Chrome Web Store listing is on its way. When it is live, this page links straight to it: press Add to Chrome, then pin Nexus Recorder from the puzzle-piece menu so its icon is always visible. Edge installs Chrome Web Store extensions too.

Early access: install the package

Until the listing is live, you can install the same extension by hand:

  1. Download nexus-recorder-0.1.3.zip and unzip it to a folder you’ll keep (check it against SHA256SUMS.txt if you like).
  2. Open chrome://extensions (in Edge, edge://extensions) and turn on Developer mode.
  3. Press Load unpacked and choose the unzipped folder.
  4. Pin Nexus Recorder from the puzzle-piece menu.

For IT administrators

If your organisation manages Chrome or Edge, extensions may need to be allowed first. Once the store listing is live, add Nexus Recorder to your allow list, or install it for everyone with your browser’s forced-install policy (ExtensionInstallAllowlist or ExtensionInstallForcelist).

03 / Turn it on

One switch for your site.

Recording is on for every project by default. A Jira administrator can turn it off for the whole site.

Where the switch is

In Jira, open Apps → Nexus Setup → Site Defaults → Nexus Recorder and use Show “Record test case” on the New test case form. When it’s off, the Record button is hidden for everyone, and test cases already recorded are not affected. Each change is written to the Nexus audit log.

Who can record

Anyone who can create test cases in the project. Nexus creates the case as the person recording, with their own Jira permissions.

04 / Record a test

From Record to Create in seven steps.

1. Open a new test case

In your project, open Nexus → Cases and press +. Fill in the name and any other details as usual.

2. Press Record

Press ● Record on the form. Nexus Recorder opens its start page in a new tab. If the extension isn’t installed, Nexus tells you and links back here.

3. Choose where to start

Enter the web address of the page where the test begins. It’s filled in with the last one you used for this project. Decide whether to Record typed values as test data, then press Start. The first time, Chrome asks you to allow Nexus Recorder; choose Allow.

4. Get to the right screen

Your app opens in the same tab with the recorder panel at the side. Nothing is recorded yet, so sign in or move to the screen where the test should begin.

5. Record

Press Record in the panel and work through the test. Steps appear in the panel as you go. Use Pause to step away, Expected result then click an element to use its text as the step’s expected result, and the camera or crop buttons for screenshots. Edit, move or delete any step in the panel.

6. Stop

Press Stop. Nexus comes back to the front with the recorded steps in the Steps tab and each screenshot listed under its step.

7. Check and create

Review the steps, add expected results, fill in any required step fields, then press Create test case. The screenshots are attached and appear inside their steps on the test case.

05 / Screenshots

Capture the screen, or just the part that matters.

Full screen

Press the camera button in the panel, or Alt+Shift+S. The screenshot is added to the latest step.

An area

Press the crop button, or Alt+Shift+R, then drag a box over the page. Press Esc to cancel.

From the page

While you’re recording, right-click the page and choose Nexus Recorder: take full screenshot or take region screenshot.

If Chrome blocks a screenshot

Chrome only lets an extension capture a page it has access to. If you chose to record on one site only, the panel explains this and offers Allow screenshots; the keyboard shortcuts and right-click menu work either way. Every screenshot ends as a thumbnail in the panel or a message saying what to do.

06 / Test data & privacy

You decide what is kept.

Recording is built to keep personal and secret information out of your test cases unless you choose otherwise.

Typed values are hidden by default

With Record typed values as test data off, a step says Enter text in “Email” without the value. Turn it on, on the start page or in the panel while recording, and the value is kept as the step’s test data.

Passwords are never recorded

Password fields always record as Enter password with ••••, whatever the setting.

It stays on your computer until you save

The recording is kept in the browser on your computer while you work. When you stop, it goes to Nexus in your Jira tab. When you create the test case it’s deleted from the extension, and unsaved recordings are deleted after seven days.

No Resync server, no tracking

Nexus Recorder only talks to Nexus in your own Jira site. It sends nothing to Resync or anyone else, has no analytics and loads no remote code. Screenshots can show whatever is on screen, so remove any you don’t want before you press Create.

07 / Permissions

What the extension asks for, and why.

Access to websites

Asked for once, when you first press Start, never at install. Chrome needs it to record your steps, to take screenshots and to keep recording when your app signs you in on another site. It is used only in the tab you are recording, only while you record. You can choose to record on one site only instead.

Side panel and tabs

To show the recorder beside the page you’re testing, open your start page and bring Nexus back to the front when you stop.

Scripting and active tab

To watch clicks and typing in the recorded tab, and to let the screenshot shortcuts and right-click items capture it.

Context menus

For the right-click screenshot items, shown only while you are recording.

08 / Common questions

Questions about Nexus Recorder.

Does it record automated tests?

It records manual test cases: readable steps a person can follow, with screenshots. It doesn’t run tests. For automated tests, see the automation guide.

Why don’t I see the Record button?

Your Jira administrator may have turned the Recorder off in Nexus Setup, or you may not have permission to create test cases in the project. In other browsers, Record explains that you need Chrome or Edge.

Something was recorded that I didn’t want

Delete or edit it in the panel while you record, or in the Steps tab before you press Create.

Can I record on a site that needs a sign-in?

Yes. Sign in before you press Record so the sign-in isn’t part of the test, or record it with typed values hidden. Sign-ins on another site, such as single sign-on, keep recording.
